MOTIVATION Ever compelled to create and having worked in media as varied as watercolor, printmaking, sculpture, installation art and furniture, Pippa first became enamored with the medium of mosaic while employed by the British School of Athens excavation of Minoan civilization in Palaikastro, Crete as a draftsperson of the archaeological finds. As the "artist in residence" she was asked to design and create a 3 x 10 meter pebble mosaic floor for the front of the dig house, a Byzantine-period olive press building. This enormous undertaking, her first mosaic, caught her imagination. The materials, texture and physical process inspired her avid pursuit of artistic and technical expertise in the medium, and the history and archaeological significance inspired her related scholarly achievement.
